Aroostook Region EMS also known as Region 5 is one of six regional non-profit Maine Government sponsored corporations set-up to handle the many needs of the EMS system. The Regions serve as extensions of the Maine EMS office. We offer and oversee training programs which lead to licensure of persons to work with an ambulance services. We administer state written and practical examinations upon course completions. We coordinate and train instructors who teach the courses at our facility and the Northern Maine Technical College. We monitor, advise, and liaison the Ambulance Services Quality Assurance, Quality Improvement programs.
We participate in various State EMS Committees; Operations Team, Education, Exam, Investigations Task Force and Medical Direction and Practice. Medical Direction and Practice Committee is attended by the Region's Medical Control Physician.
The region maintains a large inventory of equipment and learning aids, which are loaned out for use in the educational programs. The Regional Council, governing body, is made up of 20 volunteer's members that live and work in all parts of the region. Our Region takes up all of Aroostook County and the Northern parts of Washington and Penobscot Counties (Danforth and Patten areas). The Council elects a Board of Directors, namely the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. This Executive Committee sees to the immediate operations of the Regional office through meetings with the Regional Coordinator.
The Council also has an Executive committee, a nominating (membership) committee, and a Medical Control Physician. We are presently applying to be a MEMS TCAP Training Center to provide quality EMS education in rural areas at a reasonable cost.
The Day to Day operations of the Council's business is carried out by two paid employees; the Regional Coordinator and the Office Assistant, the office is located at 111 High Street Suite 1 Caribou .(Across from Shop N Save)
This is a brief overview of the function of Region V. We are a resource for questions on licensing, scope of practice, courses, continuing education, etc. Our link with Maine EMS provides a resource for those issues and questions we are not able to answer, for example reciprocity.
